Be careful when writing your equation to include tax. If tax is 4% and you multiply the cost by 0.04 do you get an answer that includes the items and the tax? If not how can you write the equation so that one equation will compute the final cost quickly and easily?
Spoiler alert! Don't look further until you try it...
If you multiply the cost of water and trail mix (1.50+2.whatever) by 1.04. The .04 is obvious, but the 1 represents the initial cost of the items.
There are a bunch of questions that I don't love like the how do the order of operations... Don't worry to much about these questions.
