Congratulations, you have chosen to do the solve a linear equation mobile project!  In a nut shell this is what you are going to do.  You are going to make up your own linear equation (and solve it) on a mobile that is balanced (just like your equation).  your prioritise are as follows:

1) Write and solve your linear equation correctly showing each step as one piece of your mobile
2) Making your mobile balanced and able to move freely
3) Including a theme from one (or more) of your classes.  Sorry, lunch and recess do not count.
4) Making your project pretty

Grading:
If your solution to your equation is wrong, the best you can get is a Partially Proficient.

Sea Camp Day 2

With All-hallows eve a week away, fog blanketed Fiesta Island with an embrace that repelled the sun’s rays and cast the Sea Camp compound in perpetual gloom.  After the high energy and sunshine of our first day at La Jolla Shores and Scripps Aquarium, the atmosphere mimicked the sleepiness that seeped from the campers and spread through the soul of Mission Bay.  Even the wafting sent of sausage and pancakes in the air couldn’t pry the clinging sleep from the eyes of the most enthusiastic Sea Camper.   Eventually, it took Will’s falling out of his lower bunk (he dreamt that his vampire, ghost girlfriend had bitten him after a long chase through Wal-Mart) to wake the dorm and alert the crew that the second day of Sea Camp had arrived. 

Despite the depressing setting, bellies full of the best breakfast foods (plus an extra serving or two of syrup) soon spurred our hearts to pound our brains into action.  On the docket today is snorkeling / seining at Mission point in the morning and the promise of hag fish slime, shark skin, and fish dissection at fish lab in the afternoon.  We donned our newly purchased navy blue Sea Camp hoodies, pulled on our sweat pants over our swim trunks and piled into the vans for the fifteen van drive, I mean rave, to the spot where the ocean meets Misson Bay, Mission Point.  Did you know that one San Diego radio station has declared itself the official ‘Katy Perry’ station?  Bet you can’t guess what

Mission point is the ideal location for introducing snorkeling because it provides relatively calm area that still has the biodiversity of the local Pacific waters.  Many species of fish and invertebrates use these protected waters as a nursery for their young so there is plentiful marine life that can be seen by simply floating along the surface of the water.  We again squeezed into our 7mm thick neoprene skin with the addition of hooded vests to guard against the inevitable chill of the 60 degree salt water that would soon engulf us and fins, masks, and snorkels.  One benefit of the thick marine layer that covered the bay is that we were treated to windless and glass surfaced conditions that allowed us to see strait down to the sandy bottom and the bay.  This year we discovered the largest black sea hares I have ever seen.  The sea hare is the largest species of slug in the world growing to the size of a basketball and weighing up to 35 pounds.  The sea hare has been given its name from its two rhinophores that slightly resemble the ears of a rabbit; to be honest one would need to blind to mistake them for a rabbit.  They are so ugly that they are cute.  Cute enough for Sydney to attempt to smuggle one out of the water in her wetsuit for a new family pet.   As you can imagine, a 35 pound ball of slug slime has no natural predators.  We discovered not one but two of these titans of the slug world canoodling under a rocky ledge.  We could practically hear Barry White playing in the background.  We also were treated to Rebecca’s new head ware, a knobby blue sea star as well and a keyhole limpet.  The key whole limpet is always a favorite of snorkeling treasure hunters because licking its underside gives the licker seven years of good luck.  I licked my first limpet seven years ago and I have gotten to go to Sea Camp ever since.  Coincidence?  I don’t think so.   In addition to bestowing years of good fortune, this invertebrate has the ability to change its taste according to season according to the Sea Camp staff.  Being so close to Thanksgiving, Cameron and I clearly tasted pumpkin pie with a hint of sweet potato.  Yum!  We also saw snails, sea urchin, and fish galore including one territorial garibaldi that chased Cody all the way back to shore.

Seining is an ancient way of catching fish where two people stretch a net between them while a line of people slowly march towards the net.  Startled fish flee the oncoming hoard of stomping feet and swim straight into the net.  Due to high tide, we were less successful than in years past in netting fish, but we still discovered the longest male pipe fish I have ever seen.  You may ask, Mr. Framke, how do you know it was Male?  Well, pipe fish are relatives of the sea horse and like sea horses, the male carries the young.  We had caught a pregnant male pipe fish.  Our group also caught a kelp crab, some kelp crawlers, and a top smelt.

After a quick lunch of sandwiches and cookies it was back to camp for fish lab. 

The most exciting part of lab is the shark tank which has a couple of species of local sharks including horn sharks, rays, and guitar fish. Everyone had the opportunity to pet the hornshark.   This was a fitting conclusion to yesterday’s shark encounter at La Jolla Shores.  While boogie boarding we were visited frequently by three 4-foot leopardsharks which caused quite a bit of fascinated screaming followed be snorkelers relentlessly chasing the sharks to watch them swim away.  Full marks go to Owen and Julia for their tenacity.  In addition to the sharks, adventurous Arielle bravely volunteered to taste the hag fish slim (salt), and Cameron ripped the heart out of the dissection mackerel “like an Aztec sacrifice”.

The only thing left to do is the mammal lab tonight and packing for the boat trip tomorrow.  Good night from San Diego,

Unit project assingment (and a change in due date)

I gave out the unit review sheet and the answers are posted on the blog.  The test will be on Friday before Sea Camp so students should use this week to study.

Assignment 2 - Unit Project (Pick one of these options)
Option 1 Drawing (solo)
Follow the directions in the textbook on the Unit Project pages.  Remember that your drawing should be mathmatically similar, not just look like the original.  The other reminder is that the report will be weighted heavier then the drawing, so take it seriously and answer all the questions in an essay format that Mrs. Degi would recongize as you best work.

Option 2 Song (groups of no more than 4)
(This can be solo or up to a group of 4 - It will be posted one the blog, but at your request it can go on youtube)
You will rewrite the lyrics for the song 'Royals' (making an mathematically similar song) to answer the majority of the questions asked about scale factors in the unit project text.  You will sing the song for the video and you will turn in a typed copy of your lyrics.  You will record during lunch time (between 12:00 and 12:45) the week after we get back from Sea Camp.  I can take three groups per day for a total of 9 singing groups and the days will be assigned on a first come/first served basis according to who comments first to this post with their desired day to record.  Here are some good examples from years past:

You will be graded on content not singing ability, but if having a video posted with you singing would embarass you, then don't pick this option!  Also, to do this right this option will take more time then option 1, however it is more fun for the more gergarious crowd.

Hints:
Your song will only work if you first count the sylables in each line of the original  and then replace it with the same number of sylables of new text.  Without doing this you will never be able to keep time with the song.  Also, I would repeat the chorus, but if verses repeat I would have each verse unique so that you can cover all the content nessessary.

We will not be traveling to Bear Valley Park tomorrow due to busing.  We will instead hold an inter squad meet at McWilliams Park on FRIDAY at 3:45.  Runners should wear their jerseys and spectators are welcome to watch.  We will have a time trail start based on last weeks time with the fastest runner leaving last.  We should have an exciting sprint finish and EVERYONE has a chance to cross the line first.

I have made a quick video going over the meet from when you get to the park to when leave the park including a map of the course with an explanation of the changes.  In the event of rain, we will go ahead with the meet and in the event of lighting we will ask you to get your team into your bus and wait until the lighting passes.  I hope that this will not be an issue.  Here is the link to the youtube video.

Please tell your runners to bring a dry set of clothes because they will get wet regardless of whether it is raining or not.  Harvard Gulch will be plenty full.

Again this year we will have Jamba Juice selling smoothies so please tell your athletes that bringing $5 to $6 would make sense.

We have over 1050 runners registered so the meet t-shirts will be given out in the A race only.  Everyone else will receive a finishers ribbon upon completion of the race.

Parent Letter

Dear Parents,

Please read through this letter with your student tonight (8/27), verify that your student has a homework assignment sheet, and sign the back page. Your child should return this signed letter to me tomorrow in class. 

Introduction

This will be my eighth year teaching 7^th and 8 the grade mathematics at Slavens and my twelfth year in DPS.  I received my Bachelors of Architecture and my teaching credential from Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and my Masters of Education from Lesley University. I then worked as an architect in San Francisco and Santa Barbara for three years while my wife worked towards her law degree at the University of California at Berkeley. We moved here in September 2001 and I spent my first year in Denver substitute teaching primarily at Colorado Academy.  I accepted a permanent position in the Denver Public Schools in August 2002. The four years prior to teaching at Slavens, I taught seventh and eighth grade connected math as well as algebra at Grant Middle School. I still stay active in architecture by teaching an architecture program sponsored by the Denver Architectural Foundation and Slater Paull Architects.  Besides my interests in teaching and architecture, I also have a passion for triathlon. I have been competing in the sport since 1991 and raced as a professional from 1999 to 2002.  .

Seventh and Eighth Grade Connected Math Program (CMP 2)

In seventh and eighth grade we will be continuing the CMP 2 curriculum, which most of the students have experienced previously. For those of you who are new to this curriculum, CMP is a project-based mathematics program that promotes discovery learning by placing a premium on hands-on activities and problem solving. CMP 2 does include algebra, however, in preparation for the high school placement tests, as well as IB and private school entrance exams, 8^th grade students will be expected to complete weekly assignments with more traditional algebra problems so that students have a better chance of receiving high school algebra credit after their eighth grade year and/or getting into the program of their choice. I am excited to tell you that over my seven years at Slavens, approximately 70% of Slavens 8^th graders start high school in 10^th grade honors geometry.   

Slavens Math Blogs

I maintain two classroom blogs, one for each grade.  I will post all explanations of homework questions on the blogs as well as class announcements on these blogs. If students choose not to use the blog, they will be missing a significant resource for receiving help. Students (and parents) are able to become followers of the blog, which means that you will receive alerts to new posts. I highly recommend that every student becomes a follower of these blogs. Although it is my goal to have things posted by 4:30 each day, due to faculty meetings, extra help, coaching obligations, and family responsibilities I can’t guarantee that I will be able to finish all posts by 4:30 and I appreciate your understanding. 

Extra Help

Your first line of help is the blogs.  I have a library of hundreds of help videos on homework and class work already posted and waiting for you on the blogs.  Each unit has a page that can be assessed by the tabs just under the title and the videos are listed by investigation.  If you have trouble with your homework look to the blog first.  When using the help videos don’t just watch the problem and then do it yourself.  You should pause the video after each step and do that step yourself before continuing the video.  If you would like help on a problem that isn’t on the blog, then all you need to do is write the problem number on the ‘to be blogged’ board the next day and I will get it up on the blog.  While you’re reading this why not go to the site now to check it out. 

If after the blog and asking questions in class aren’t enough, then I will suggest coming to extra help.  I intend to continue providing extra help one day a week after school from 3:10 - 4:10. During most of the year these help sessions will be on Thursday, however, I am going to be coaching cross country, Mathletics, MathCounts, and flag football so during the first athletic season, help days will change from week to week.  I will post the days I am available on the bottom of the homework assignment sheet and on the math blogs.  Please check it every two weeks so that you and your student know when help is offered.   If you have any questions, feel free to contact me at kirk_framke@dpsk12.org.  Please allow 24 hours for me to respond. 

Finally, every year around October several parents ask for referrals for tutors.  The vast majority of students will not need tutors to pass my classes, but instead of waiting for crisis to occur I am offering two suggestions if this is something you are interested in.  Last year 8 students were seeing a tutor regularly

Homework

It is my intent to give 30 to 45 minutes of CMP homework a night.  Some assignments may take more or less time depending on the student.  I do not want students to spend more than an hour on math homework a night so if your student has worked for a solid 60 minutes you can stop them and write a note on their homework and still receive full credit.

CMP homework is graded on whether or not you tried it to the best of your ability.  CMP homework will be checked in as opposed to graded.  If you and/or your child would like to check your answers for the homework if you are getting them right, to are encouraged to either watch the full explanation videos on the blog or read the answer key which is also on the blog.  Obviously it would be considered cheating to look at the answers prior to doing the problem.

There will be additional homework assignments that will be turned in and graded for accuracy.  The most common of these are the algebra sheets in 8^th grade and online Edmodo assignments for 7^th grade.  These assignments are typically once a week.  The algebra will be passed out on either Monday or Tuesday and will be due on Friday.

 Grades

Final grades are weighted.  The categories for 8^th grade are tests/quizzes (55%), CMP home work (15%), class work (15%), algebra enrichment (15%).  Seventh grade will vary slightly.
